What is herbal medicine?
Herbal medicines are derived from plants, and can include leaves, roots, bark and flowers. They can also be derived from fungi, such as mushrooms. Whole plants and parts of plants are used in teas, pills, extracts, oils and ointments and have a variety of healing uses.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) are ways of healing and treatment that are different from what we may think of as the medical care you typically receive at your doctor's office (we will call this biomedical care from now on). Meditation, yoga, acupuncture, herbal treatment and massage are some examples of CAM.
Did your grandmother or neighborhood elder ever tell you about an herbal remedy for a headache or stomach problem by giving you some fresh herbs such as chamomile, peppermint, ginger or some tea mixture? If so, you have already experienced what is known as complementary and alternative medicine (known as CAM). It's common for herbal remedies to be used and shared in the African, African-American West Indian and Latino communities and these remedies are types of CAM.
