    Let’s stop domestic violence together.

    What is domestic violence?

Domestic violence, or intimate partner violence (IPV), is psychological, emotional, physical, or sexual harm one partner does to the other. Domestic violence includes violence and the threat of violence. Domestic violence can happen in any kind of relationship regardless of sexual orientation, gender, race, age, religion, or economic status. This kind of violence happens when one partner controls or has power over another.

    • 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime.
    • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence by their partner in their lifetime.
    • Domestic violence accounts for 15% of all violent crimes.
    • 1 in 7 women and 1 in 18 men have been stalked by their partner during their lifetime to the point in which they felt very fearful or believed that they or someone close to them would be harmed or killed.
    • 1 in 15 children are exposed to domestic violence each year.

How can we prevent domestic violence?

    • Call the police if you see or hear evidence of domestic violence.
    • Speak out publicly against domestic violence. For example, if you hear a joke about beating your spouse, let that person know you aren't ok with that kind of humor.
    • Maintain a healthy, respectful romantic relationship as a model for your children and others.
    • Encourage your neighborhood watch or block association to watch for domestic violence and report it as well.
    • Be especially vigilant about domestic violence during the stressful holiday season.

Another way is to support each other at the community level by creating ways for people to learn about domestic violence and how to get help through our faith based community organizations, schools and local hospitals or medical center.
