  • In the News: NJ Transit will continue allowing alcohol on trains

    Anonymous September 23rd, 2024

New Jersey Transit has decided not to completely ban alcohol on its trains. Instead, it will ban drinking at times and places when people are more likely to drink and hurt or harass other riders. For instance, train passengers will not be allowed to drink on St. Patrick’s Day and during certain concerts.

Passengers often buy beer at terminals like Penn Station and drink it on their way home. Recently, many drunk passengers have been arrested on NJ Transit trains after fighting, assaulting train conductors, or upsetting other riders.

In response, a group of concerned passengers urged NJ Transit to ban alcohol completely. However, as conductors can already prevent drunk passengers from riding trains, the agency will leave things as they are. A NJ Transit spokesperson said the agency’s goal is to “encourage personal responsibility” since “the overwhelming majority of our customers behave themselves” and they don’t want to punish well-behaved passengers.
