Profile of Hope: More from Vickie Powell, MS, RPh
Making lifestyle changes isn't easy. Learn how Vicki Powell, MS, RPh, a busy pharmacy director at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, overcame the obstacles she faced to improving her health.
How did you cope with challenges that came up along the way?
Well, it wasn't easy. I can't say I was perfect and did everything correctly every day. But I had a lot of support from family, friends, my yoga teacher and my doctor. It helped me get through the tough times when I slipped a little. My husband exercises with me and we watch what we eat together. Having his support has helped tremendously.
What do you do to make sure you maintain your healthy lifestyle?
I continue to exercise at least 30 minutes a day 5 times a week. I just joined Jenny Craig because it is hard to plan my meals with such a busy schedule. I wear a pedometer everyday and try to walk 10,000 steps per day. I continue to go to Yoga once a week.
How have your family/friends/church helped you stay on track?
My husband and I work out together. My husband encourages me. We’ve also help each other eat healthier. Our church has weight loss challenges, and we encourage each other to stay on track.
