  • New Family Health Center in Harlem: A Great Resource For Quality Healthcare in Harlem

The Institute for Family Health welcomed guests and partners to a groundbreaking ceremony on February 14, 2024 at the site of the future Family Health Center of Harlem, located at the corner of Madison and 119th Street, New York, NY. When it opens in early 2024, the site will be a 37,000 square foot community health center, offering primary care, mental health, and dental care services to patients of all ages, regardless of ability to pay. At full capacity, the new center will provide over 85,000 visits annually.

The Institute for Family Health is a health organization with a rich history and expert leadership. Since 1983, they have grown from a small non- profit to one of the largest community health centers in New York state serving over 90,000 patients annually at 26 locations. According to Karen Westervelt, Special Policy Advisor for Primary Care Development at the New York State Department of Health, "This is a fabulous opportunity, and a prime example of what we [at the Department of Health] are trying to promote. I commend the Institute for Family Health for working to preserve and enhance quality primary care services in the Harlem community. It’s fitting that we’re meeting on Valentine’s Day, as this is an organization with real heart."

As Dr. Neil Calman, the Institute’s president and CEO, welcomed the crowd of about 90 well- wishers, he said, “As the newest site in our network of nearly 30 community health center facilities, the new Family Health Center of Harlem will enhance the community’s access to outpatient primary care health services, mental health services and dental services and will provide training for family medicine residents as well as dental and social work students. It will also provide about 100 permanent jobs in the community.”

Attendees at the groundbreaking event included representatives from the Governor’s Office and the Office of Congressman Charles Rangel, as well as numerous partners and funders that have supported the project.
