Harlem Word: Oraia Reid talks about how Harlem residents can get involved with RightRides
Oraia Reid is co-founder and executive director of RightRides for Women's Safety, an organization she started as a response to a rise in violence and sexual assault against women. Reid's organization provides direct services, safety education and advocacy. Their flagship program offers a free, safe late-night ride home to women, transpeople, and gender queer individuals. Read here to learn how you can get involved in this great organization.
Q: How do I get involved?
A: To use the RightRides service, just call 1-888-215-7233. If you are interested in volunteering with RightRides, you can email our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@rightrides.org or call during office hours (718) 522-0822 to learn about becoming a volunteer. Men and women can volunteer with the RightRides program, as a driver or navigator, but one member of the team must identify as female. We have 130 active driving team volunteers, but we can always use more people to help expand the service to more nights and more areas. We also need volunteer help with our outreach efforts in putting up posters, cards, and talking to people about the organization.
