Food Day is a national celebration of healthy and affordable local food. On October 24th, events will be held around the country to help spread the word and encourage us to eat healthier and push for a better food system.
Many people today are stuck eating unhealthy food because there is little fresh food in their neighborhood or they feel they can’t afford better quality food, or they don’t know that what they’re eating is bad for them. Many neighborhoods mostly have fast food restaurants and few or low quality grocery stores. Because of this, the rates of obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes are all getting higher. But, this does not have to be the case.
Food Day helps us remember to come together and work towards a healthy future. Throughout the year we can do this by shopping at farmers’ markets, trying not to eat fast food, and working to convince those that make the laws that we need healthier food options at more affordable prices. Food Day, then, is a reminder and an opportunity for us to have some fun while working to create a healthier, cheaper, and more local food system.
