April is Alcohol Awareness Month in the United States. Do you know the signs of alcohol abuse? Use and abuse of alcohol is a serious issue that shouldn't be ignored. If untreated, use and abuse can eventually develop into alcoholism. If you're worried about your own alcohol use or that of a friend or family member, here are some warning signgs to look for.
Symptoms of alcohol abuse:
- Blackouts or memory loss
- Arguments or fights that happen over and over with family members
- Irritability, depression, or mood swings
- Continuing to use alcohol to relax, cheer up, sleep, deal with problems, or to feel "normal"
- Headache, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, nausea, when one stops drinking
- Flushed skin on the face
- Trembling hands
- Chronic diarrhea
- Drinking alone, in the mornings, or in secret
The good news is that there is treatment for alcohol abuse. However, because alcoholism is different for each person, treatment is not simple. Effective treatment programs have many parts that target different aspects of addiction. Because addiction is usually a chronic disease, people cannot simply stop drinking for a few days and be cured. Several different types of treatments include behavioral treatments, medication, and mutual-support groups.
If you or someone you know is caring for a person who has problems with alcohol, remember to also find a way to take care of yourself. It may help to seek support from others, including friends, family, community, and support groups. Remember that your loved one is ultimately responsible for managing his or her illness.
