  • Getting Neighborhood Supermarkets to Support Healthy Eating.

Do you notice that when you go into some supermarkets in the neighborhood the first product on display is junk food?  I've also noticed that a lot of items on sale are cookies, cakes, and chips.   With a large percentage of harlem residents suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity, I think its important that we get support from our grocers regarding healthier eating.  What do you think?

its so very important and one of the most frustrating things about living in harlem is the lack of fresh produce. fat, salt and sugar on every corner.... FYI there's been a plan in action for starting a co-op at 145th for some time now, they need more members and funding. google harlem coop. it would be great if the coop could get support from this website, maybe coordinate an event or fundraiser?

Great ideas! This is definitely an issue that needs much attention which we are trying to focus on in this website. We will post information about the Harlem Natural Food Co-op (http://www.harlemnaturalfoodcoop.com/). Thanks!
not sure what we can do about it. they are there for a reason. per square feet they make $$$!
So true! Here's a trick: Try to stick to the perimeter of the supermarket when you shop, and avoid the inner aisles.
That's a good idea. I also think reaching out to a supermarket - especially if it's part of a major chain, and expressing concern is also important. Our hard earned dollars enhance their bottom lines, no?
