Mayor Bloomberg rightly praised great teachers in his State of the City address today. We salute his plans to improve teacher pay and professional development, and to juice more learning with serious technological pop.
We also praise great phys-ed teachers, and want them free to add more value to students' learning in every school in New York City.
Data consistently shows that kids who get enough phys-ed focus better, retain more, and can perform better on tests than kids who are restless, sleepy or suffering the effects of obesity and diabetes. Yet we're still pushing the stone uphill to gather data that shows that the city should invest in prep and professional development and that every child should get at least the 120 minutes of physical activity per week that state standards require.
