Understanding the direction on a prescription can sometimes be confusing. While pharmacists are always available to answer your questions, the table below will help you understand how to follow the directions for how often you need to take your medications.

Directions                 Medical Shorthand*This means: Take you medicine... Once a day QD one time each day, usually at the same time each day. Twice a day BID two times during the day, as close to 12 hours apart as possible. Three times a day TID three times during the day, first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and half way in between the day. Four times a day QID four times during the day, first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and two more times spaced equally in between. Take as needed PRN when neede, but not to exceed the recommended dose. *Medical Shorthand is what the doctor writes on your prescription.
