WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT
The Harlem Health Promotion Center (HHPC) is one of 37 Prevention Research Centers (PRCs) nationwide funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, due to federal budget cuts we are now in jeopardy of losing our funding.
The big picture
The federal budget process and many of the current legislative proposals present serious threats to the progress the nation has made towards health equity and the elimination of racial and ethnic health disparities. The CDC’s PRCs work hand-in-hand with underserved communities to develop strategies that promote community health. The approach draws on the wisdom of local communities, the commitment of researchers, and the resources of the CDC.
We only have a short time to reach out to our politicians and fight for our funding, so time is of the essence if you want us to remain as a critical health resource in Northern Manhattan.
Here are a few reasons the Harlem Health Promotion Center is vital to Northern Manhattan:
Outreach and Education:
Providing support and health care services to 250 young people, aged 14-24, living with HIV and AIDS over the past two decades through its Project STAY initiative. Additionally, to reduce the community burden of HIV/AIDS, since 2024 the Mobile Health Team has provided more than 8,000 adolescents and young adults with sexual health risk reduction information, and over 3,000 with counseling, screening, and treatment for sexually transmitted infections.
A dynamic health website:
In 2024 HHPC launched GetHealthyHarlem.org, a unique website that is tailored to the health needs of Northern Manhattan residents. Because of its community focus, our site users have grown more than 1,000 percent in three years! We now have more than 6,000 unique visits per month, thus demonstrating its utility for the communities it serves.
Helping community members manage high blood pressure:
Our newest project focuses on helping 900 members of the Northern Manhattan community get a handle on the silent but deadly killer—high blood pressure (hypertension). Project SHARE (Support for Hypertension Awareness, Reduction and Education) aims to help our community members extend their lives and boost their health through this innovative program that pairs online education with community health worker support and linkages to care.
What we need from you:
Your state and local Representative needs to hear from you TODAY! By signing this petition today, you, your colleagues and your community partners can urge policy makers to protect vital government programs, including the Prevention Research Center Program and therefore HHPC. We need you to act fast and let our policymakers know that you will not stand for cuts to valuable community programs.
