Low Glycemic Eating Is Hot!

Blog entry posted by nbruning 30 weeks ago
Key words: Health Info.

I think we're finally reaching critical mass in the realization that 1) junk food is addictive and makes us want to eat more, more, more and 2) low glycemic eating is the antidote.

In the last couple of months, several stories have been widely published, including stories about a new book by former FDA chief David Kessler.   In his book, "The End of Overeating," he chronicles his own struggles with weight and concludes that millions share what he calls "conditioned hypereating" - a willpower-sapping drive to eat high-fat, high-sugar foods.  When a mainstream crusader like this one calls us to action, we'd better listen.

According to an Associated Press story, Kessler says "The food industry has figured out what works. They know what drives people to keep on eating... It's the next great public health campaign, of changing how we view food..."  He says the culprits foods are "layered and loaded" with combinations of fat, sugar and salt -- and often so processed that you don't even have to chew much!

My second example is the results of a study presented at the March annual Society for Endocrinology meeting. Scientists announced that eating a meal with a low glycemic index (GI) increases production of a gut hormone (GLP-1) which suppresses your appetite and makes you feel full. GI ranks foods according to their effect on the body’s blood sugar levels. A low GI meal takes longer to digest and releases sugar into the bloodstream more slowly than a high GI meal.  High GI foods include white bread, pasta, and cornflakes, whereas most fruit and vegetables and some whole grains are all classed as low GI foods.

In the real world, these two findings help explain why low glycemic eating, like the plan at the core of the Transitons Lifestyle System I use in my group and one-to-on coaching, increases the likelihood of success.

By "success" I mean the abiity to stay on a program for life and an increased feeling of well-being, as well as inches lost.

Last night, I re-measured my Transitions group of four at their 8th week mark....even I was amazed, and they were ecstatic.

They lost a total of 11.25 inches overall this time, plus 35 inches last time for an incredible total of (drum roll!) 46.25 inches in just 7 weeks of Transitions eating and supplementation.

By the way, breaking it down, they've whittled their waists by a total of 17.5 inches.

Their average: 11.5" overall, 4.5" from the waist. (The other parts we measured were hips, chest, biceps and thighs.)

And, they showed no signs of stopping, since they were excited by their new menu, their new shapes, and the glowing energy and improved mood they were all experiencing. (No grouchy dieters, here!)

This is why I'm so excited to be offering a trio of Trantions programs and events, starting on Monday May 4th, with a free Transitions overview, live, on the web (a webinar); a 6-week Fast Track version of the program starting on May 11th (also via the web); and the full 12-week course live in Washington Heights starting on May 20th.

I'm looking forward to "seeing" you at one or more of these... see "events" for details.
