Dr. Kathie-Ann Joseph, MD, MPH, is an active member of the medical community in Northern Manhattan and has served on the GetHealthyHarlem.org Health Advisory Board for more than a year. Here she talks about how she became interested in breast health.
Q: How are you involved in Northern Manhattan?
A: I previously worked at New York Presbyterian Hospital as a breast surgeon and I was also the Medical Director for a program called Women at Risk. I am currently a breast surgeon at New York University Langone Medical Center. In addition, I am also the director of breast services for the South Manhattan Network of the Health and Hospitals Corporation. I take care of people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer or other types of breast conditions. Patients are referred to me by their primary care doctor or self-referred if a woman knows she is more likely to get breast cancer because other people in her family have had it.
Q: How did you become interested in treating breast cancer?
A: My first experience screening women for breast cancer was when I was in college, while I was working at Harlem Hospital. I worked with another woman who was running a breast and cervical cancer screening program. While I worked there I met many women, some even in their 60's or 70's, who had never been tested for breast cancer before. It was an eye-opening experience for me. When I was in medical school, starting my residency I became interested in surgery. I was able to combine my three interests: breast cancer, screenings, and surgery which led to my career in breast surgery.
