Several photographs from two photo essays that won the recent GetHealthyHarlem.org photo contest are currently on display at Land Yoga in Harlem. The photos in the exhibit represent the photographers’ ideas of what health in Northern Manhattan means to them. Using both the photographs themselves and captions, the photographers Jessica Rao and Bianca Shmulevich express their very personal experiences of how to stay healthy in our neighborhood every day.
The GethealthyHarlem.org website is a groundbreaking plain language, community-focused health website with social networking features that was developed through years of community collaboration. More than 6,000 people use GetHealthyHarlem.org each month to gather localized health information and to share their own views and experiences about health with the community.
Winning photos for this photo contest were chosen based on originality, subject matter, thematic presentation, and artistic merit. We also considered the stories the photos tell about health in our community. Most of the photos were taken around Harlem and highlight spaces where community members can improve their health and wellness.
Land Yoga is located on 2116 Frederick Douglass boulevard. This exhibit will be open to the public Monday-Fridays from 6-11 a.m. and evening from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Click here for more information about Land Yoga.
