Harlem Word: Wendee Corsino
Wendee Corsino came to a career in fitness by chance. Now she brings physical activity to parks in Harlem.
Q: How did you get started as a fitness instructor?
A: I worked for several years as a flight attendant and then in a legal office. Then I found out about a unique fitness instructor certification program offered by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. The program provides training for free if the person agrees to work one day a week for six months teaching fitness classes for the city. Now, four years after taking the class, I’ve made a career teaching fitness classes and conducting personal training.
Q: What fitness activities are you a part of in Harlem?
A: I lead a walking group in Marcus Garvey Park three days a week. It’s through the Shape Up New York program. Although, walking isn’t the only thing happening when the group meets. The group has lots of different ages and fitness levels, so we go through both cardiovascular and strength training exercises using things found in the park (like benches, playground equipment) to make this a challenging workout.
Q: What’s your advice to people who want to be healthier?
A: Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t just about weight loss; it’s about moving your body and feeding it with good things. Remember, being healthy is not solely about the size of your body. It’s about working at keeping a healthy lifestyle.
I encourage everyone no matter what their fitness level to try to add more physical activity into their day. Any physical activity is better than none, so start where you can and add gradually. Keep moving and don’t look back!
Q: Do you find it difficult to be active in New York City?
A: Not at all, there are a lot places to get outside and get moving in the city. I live in Washington Heights. There are lots of great parks in Northern Manhattan, so I try get outside as much as possible. I take advantage of the parks as much as I can, even if it’s just for a quick walk.
Wendee would like to thank Nancy Klitsner, MA and Reine Vilim, MA for their commitment to the Aerobic Leadership Training Program and continued encouragement.
