My running adventures: back at square one

Blog entry posted by Riverside 37 weeks ago

Sooo it's officially been 9 days since I last attempted to run and had that awful fall.  With my wounds scabbed over I finally decided I needed to get back out for another run.  So when my body woke me up especially early this morning, I figured I'd seize the moment and go for a run.

Unfortunately, when you've only been running for two weeks and you stop running for practically two weeks after that, your body doesn't keep its base level of fitness.  Therefore, when I went out to run this morning it was like starting over all over again.  Appropriately, I decided to run the same route I did the first day and got in a solid ~1.5 miles.

I know I had promised myself a watch if I stuck with running for a month, but I think the time has come to buy one (pun intended).  The first time I trained for a 5k, I was able to track my progress not by distance, but by time.  Although I'm more concerned with just getting out there this time around, I also do need to reach the 3.1 mile distance by the time October 31st rolls around, and so far the closest I've come is 2 miles - and that was only once.  The strategy I used last time was to time myself - The first day I'd run for 10 minutes (which was appx a mile), the second day I'd also run for 10 minutes.  The third day, I'd run 11 or 12 depending on what I was feeling, and so on.  Incrementally adding time was an easy way to measure progress.  Adding distance is highly variable and not nearly as good as an indicator, for me anyway.

So, my goal for this weekend is to trek over to Target and buy myself a sports watch so I can start holding myself more accountable and start building up strength.

Today's run: Eh.

Tomorrow's run: Will be much better. (or so I'm trying to convince myself)
