September is National Preparedness Month Part 4 - Include Pets in Emergency Plans
More tips for you in honor of National Preparedness Month!
If you are a pet owner, you should include your pets in your emergency plans. For example, you could:
- Identify pet-friendly hotels/motels outside the affected area or arrange for family/friends outside the affected area to shelter you pet, especially if you have to evacuate
- Create a Go Bag for your pet in case of an evacuation
- Leave at least a three-day supply of water and food for your pet if you need to leave your pet at home
- Make sure your dog or cat wears a collar or harness with proper identification tags, including your name, address, and phone number, as well as a phone number of an emergency contact
You can find more information about pet preparedness and download a Ready New York: Pets Guide on the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) website. You can also find more information about emergency preparedness there!
