Awesome! I wonder if more teams will do that also!

Yeah breast cancer awareness has been all over the place this month - but I can't help but think about all the other causes that can use support and contributions... You don't see this much attention around HIV/AIDS in the media, for instance. It seems that people find it easy to rally behind the "safe" causes - diseases with no stigma - rather than the ones that can probably use the money and positive energy the most.

I'm not putting down supporters of breast cancer research at all - I just wished the same attention was paid to all causes, particularly the ones that are often painted in a negative light..

Actually all the teams were wearing pink! But I totally agree with you Riverside but perhaps those who are campaigning for HIV/AIDS and other causes just need to campaign better. They need to hire a better campaigning team. The campaigners for breast cancer have an amazing team. That's just something that can't be denied.

I highly doubt it has to do with their campaigning team so much as the cause... fans might be outraged if the teams rallied for something as stigmatized as HIV... it would, in the minds of many, be as if they were supporting homosexuality or injection drug use... which could tarnish a team or organization's reputation. That's how I feel about it anyway.

For the record, HIV/AIDS affects EVERYONE - men, women, straight, gay, rich, poor...

And also - Breast Cancer research IS important - a cause that I myself have contributed to - I just wish that the country would rally for other causes the same way they do breast cancer :)

I am all for supporting breast cancer research, but there are so many conditions/diseases that deserve to be well-funded to find treatments, cures, or increase awareness. The merchandising to support breast cancer awareness and support is so woven into our culture that I think we can begin to support other causes.

Take lupus for instance. This autoimmune disease affects many people and can be fatal in some cases. For nearly 50 years, there have been no new drugs/treatments to specifically combat lupus. Why? Awareness is extremely low so money does not get to researchers or public awareness campaigns as much as other more 'popular' causes. I suppose it's all about who gets affected by these illnesses. If someone really famous had lupus and was willing to tell their story, perhaps that might help. Snoop Dogg's daughter has lupus and he was recently on The View to discuss this experience. We need more folks to step forward and be passionate about getting behind these other causes.

Here's an interesting article about how companies, such as the NFL, spend the month of October wearing the color pink and supporting breast cancer causes but aren't necessarily doing anything to prevent breast cancer (they use chemicals in their plastic chin guards, for example, which might lead to cancer).

Just an interesting thing to think about. It's one thing to SAY you're supporting a cause, another thing to actually DO something to truly support a cause. Many of these organizations only donate a small fraction of their profits to breast cancer causes, and instead use it as a way to increase profits for themselves.

Next time you make a donation, check to see how much of your donation is ACTUALLY going to the cause it's meant to go to. Otherwise, go online to the organization's website and make a donation directly to them. Take the middleman such as the NFL, the supermarket, or the makeup counter out of it.
