Salad - New place in Harlem AND growing your own!!
Apparently a new salad place opened up on 125th. It's called "island salad". Here's the article I found about it, posted Dec. 14th 2024. http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/14/a-big-salad-person-reaches-out-to-harlem/#more-111553 .
Has anyone been there?
Here is their website (nice music) http://www.islandsalad.com/. I checked out the menu and prices, still a little high, maybe a $1 or so less that what you'd get elsewhere in the City. But at least there's a place to get salad here. I'll try to make a point to try it sometime in the New Year!
Speaking of salad...
I got some lettuce seeds at an event I went to a few weeks ago and they've started to sprout! I wonder if I'll actually be able to grow salad in my apartment. I am looking online to see what other vegetable and herb seeds I can buy that grow well indoors. I think I am going to try:
- scallions
- tomatoes
- lettuce
- spinach
Has anyone tried to grow these inside...and kept them inside? I've been reading a lot and they always tell you to grow it inside to start, but then transplant outside.
Hopefully, after I gather enough knowledge and try some of these out, I will have my own salad garden. It'll save me money and I'd know where my food came from. Exciting!

Flag as inappropriateThis is GREAT! I'm going to have to try it on my lunch break! Such a great example of someone in the community making the changes that they want to see take place!

Flag as inappropriateLaura, if you get to "island salad" before I do, please post a review! But I'll try and make it there as soon as I can.

Flag as inappropriateI went to island salad last week. I ordered the "island salad burrito" which was quite tasty. The place is very cute and has an outdoor area in the back (not on the street side, imagine that!). The burrito cost me about $8 or so. The staff is very nice and the food looks good. Definitely something good to eat instead of the other take out places here...
