The standard surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease is Nissen fundoplication . The whole procedure is often done using a laparoscopic (minimally invasive surgery performed through small incisions) surgical technique, but can also be performed as traditional open surgery.

During this surgery, the surgeon wraps parts of the stomach (i.e. gastric fundus) around the lower esophagus in order to strengthen the natural valve between the stomach and the esophagus. This is done to prevent the refluxed stomach content to come into contact with the esophagus.
