Garden in a box...? Can I grow cheap, healthy food?

Blog entry posted by DrDre 2 years ago

I have a small backyard patio and I want to grow something. For a birthday present, my mother gave me some boxes for container gardening. Will I produce anything? Will I remember to water them? Will I eat healthier if I have easy access to veggies and grow them myself?

The brand I got is Earth Box

NYC Department of Health says to stop pouring on the pounds! New ad campaign

Blog entry posted by cesar 1 year ago

The NYC Department of Health has a new ad campaign out to try to get NYers to think twice about drinking sugary beverages (link to press release: http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/pr2009/pr057-09.shtml).

I like the ads the health department has put out recently because while they can be shocking and a little gross, if they get people's attention, why not?

Started an indoor garden...

Blog entry posted by cesar 1 year ago

I finally did it. I started a vegetable garden in my apartment. I have pretty good light in my living room and have been growing basil, parsley and mint there for a few months.

After going to a food conference a few months ago, I was motivated to try my hand at planting some veggies and different herbs.

FRESH (Food Retail Expansion to Support Health) program is a good step to bringing supermarkets to Harlem, but is not enough!

The New York City Council, the Borough Presidents and the City Planning Commission have come up with a program, called the FRESH program that works on giving people reason to develop grocery stores in neighborhoods that have poor access to good food, like Harlem.

Harlem Meats on St. Nick...

Blog entry posted by cesar 1 year ago

Just took a walk and saw that Harlem Meats opened up. I went in and they had a lot of fruits and veggies at prices that seemed to be ok. Bunch of scallions was $0.69. They also had other groceries like eggs, milk, yogurt.  I did a little search online and found some pictures to share with you from Yelp.com.

Healthy Vending Machine and Ice Cream Truck Choices

Blog entry posted by Riverside 47 weeks ago

I was just watching the Rachael Ray show and they had someone (Liz Vaccariello) on there that showed you how to make healthy choices when eating at a vending machine.  Surprisingly, if you want chips Veggie chips can be just as bad as regular chips - so can baked chips!  Apparently Soy Crisps are much healthier.
